 An Introduction to Teams

British Riding Clubs arrange a number of UK wide competitions for teams from across the UK to compete in. These include:

-          Winter Championships (Dressage and Indoor Showjumping)

-          Festival of the Hunter

-          National Horse Trials Championships

-          National Championships (dressage, riding test, show jumping, style jumping)

-          Dressage to Music and Quadrille

But before that; British Riding Clubs divide the country up into 23 areas and each area holds team competitions.

The teams which do the best at these Area competitions, qualify to compete at the main competitions listed above.

Aspley Guise and District Riding Club are part of Area 7 (Beds, Herts and Cambs).

We need to enter a team in order to be in with a chance of competing against other Riding Clubs.

Teams are open to everyone, whatever age or level of experience, so please come and have a go, no pressure involved!

There are four people on each team, and there are separate Senior and Junior (under 18) teams.

Generally, the best three scores count and the bottom score is dropped, so if you’re having a bad day don’t panic!

We will organise a time for the team to meet up either for a training session with the horses or a swift half at the pub, so you’ll meet your team members before the day.

So what do you do if you’d like to take part in an AG&D RC team?

  1. Call or email Rachael Mackie saying “please can I be on the team for X event!” (contact details below). Rachael is our team co-ordinator.
  2. Rachael will send you a letter and form which you will need to return along with your entry fee. The entry fee varies between competitions – check the schedule on the team events page.
  3. Rachael will let you know when the team are meeting up for training or at the pub.
  4. Rachael will let you know what time you are competing.
  5. Once you get to the venue on the day, call Rachael and she’ll declare the whole team. Then you just need to do your class the same as you would if you were competing as an individual. The best 3 scores of the team will count.

Rachael Mackie: Rachael_017@hotmail.com or 07891 428446 - If you have any questions about anything, however small, please email or ring Rachael

*PLEASE NOTE* Closing dates for team events are a lot further in advance than for our usual competitions. We have to tell British Riding Clubs whether we are entering a team or not four weeks in advance, so please make a note of the closing date on the schedule!

Please also take note that your horse will need a fully up to date vaccination certificate bringing with you. More details at the bottom of the page.

Teams FAQ’s

Why do I need to enter and pay 4 weeks in advance?

British Riding clubs (BRC) operate a preliminary entry system. This means we have to send an entry form stating how many teams and/or individuals we are sending to the area competition and pay a fee to BRC. This fee ranges from £7 - £16 per rider depending on the event. AGDRC subsidises some of this cost. We have to know exactly how many confirmed entries we have so that we can meet the closing date which is 21 days before the event or 30th June for Summer events. BRC are very strict; late entries not accepted, and if we do too many and don’t send a team or individual to Area we still have to pay the Area entry fee which ranges from £12 - £50 per rider depending on the event. As you can see teams can be very expensive, which is why we have to be strict and do things early so we don’t waste money making entries when we don’t have a team!

Are all Area events team only?

Most events are for teams and individuals. If you are in a team you are automatically entered as an individual. If a team cannot be made you will be entered as an individual to represent the club. We can send a mixture of teams and individuals if needed. There are some events which are for pairs or individuals, this will be clearly stated in each event’s details.

How many tests/classes can I enter at each event?

This depends on the event. Most are only one test or class per horse. The area dressage and DTM are slightly different. Under each event it will clearly state if you can be enter in more than one class per horse. One rider may ride different horses, but they can only ride once in each team.

Why do I need an up to date vaccination certificate?

British Riding Clubs are very strict on this rule and if you do not have an up to date vaccination certificate you will be eliminated. You must bring your passport and original vaccination dates (all the way back to the first ones, which may in some cases be in two parts.) This must come with you on the day of competition. Don’t worry now, when Rachael sends you your letter she will also send the rules for vaccination certificates. She will also ask for a photocopy of the dates and a copy of your horse’s drawings and competition name. She will double check these so there is no disappointment on the day. The rules are also at the bottom of this information. Here is an excel spreadsheet so you can also check your own. http://www.area7brc.com/FLU%20VAC%20CHECKER.xls

How do I know I have a place?

Rachael will text or ring you to say she has received your form back. She will also keep an up-to-date list of everyone who is in teams for the whole year on the website. If your name is on the list you have a place in the events that are on your part of the letter.

What happens in the weeks before and on the day?

This is not something to worry about yet, this will all be explained in the letter as it varies for every event. Most often, Rachael will post who is competing at that particular event on the website so people can chat to others competing that day. You will not be put into teams at this point as they can change last minute; we all know what horses can be like! In the week before the event, Rachael will ring or text with times and any other relevant info. She will give you a sheet on the day with all the teams competing that day and their times. This way you know who is in your team and you can support other members of the club. Teams are decided by Rachael Mackie in the first instance and are double checked by the Chair, Mary Cloake.

What happens on the day?

On the day Rachael is normally there early to collect numbers and declare the teams. It is your job to ring Rachael’s mobile to find her and she will point out others in your team. You will need to take your vaccination certificate and passport to the organiser for checking. This again will be explained in more detail in your letter as some events may be slightly different. Some venues we can try to park together; ring Rachael when you arrive or try to spot the club banner!

What tack and dress do I wear?

The rules about tack and dress will be put on the club website. Please check these regularly as they change when the new rules come into force in April. It is your responsibility to check these rules, you will have a tack check before you compete. The following website is a link to the 2009 rules which will be in use till April 2010. http://www.bhs.org.uk/Riding/British_Riding_Clubs/2009_Rulebook.aspx

Is there any training?

We are hoping to offer some optional team training in 2010 which will be organised by another committee member. Please keep your eye on the website for more details. In addition to this, when you get your letter there will be a box to tick to say you would be interested in optional training. If you tick this box your details will be passed on to the organiser who will contact you.

G7 EQUINE INFLUENZA-PLEASE READ-IMPORTANTG7.1

Valid Certificates - Vaccination Procedure

Each horse must have a valid vaccination certificate, which undeniably relates to that horse, completed, signed and stamped on each line by a veterinary surgeon, who is not the owner of the animal. It must state that the horse has received two injections for primary vaccination against Equine Influenza given no less than 21 days and no more than 92 days apart. (Only these first two injections need to have been given before the horse may compete). In addition a first booster injection must be given no less than 150 days and no more than 215 days after the second injection of the primary vaccination. Subsequently, booster injections must be given at intervals of not more than 1 year apart, commencing after the first booster injection. None of these injections must have been given within the preceding 7 days, including the day of the competition or entry into the competition stables. Annual vaccinations may be given on the same date each year, but this is not recommended.

G7.2 Producing Vaccination Certificates on Demand

The vaccination certificate must, under penalty of elimination, accompany the horse to all official competitions (See Rule G1.1) and the competitor is responsible for producing it on demand. See also Rule G7.5 below.

G7.3 Horses foaled before 1st January 1980

Horses foaled before 1st January 1980 need not have had the first booster injection (no less than 150 days and no more than 215 days after the second injection of the primary vaccination) - but must have had annual boosters (given within twelve months) thereafter. Horses of all ages should, however, have been given a First Booster if they started or re-started their injections on or after 01 January 1991.

G7.4 Allergic Horses & Homeopathic vaccinations

Horses, which for any reason are unable to be vaccinated against equine influenza, will not be given any dispensation to compete. Homeopathic vaccinations are not acceptable.

G7.5 Checking of Certificates

All flu vaccination certificates will be checked at Area Qualifiers and at the Championships before the horse is allowed to compete and anyone with an invalid certificate may not be permitted to compete. It is the responsibility of the competitor to ensure that their horse has been correctly vaccinated, that the certificate clearly shows this and that it complies with the rules in all respects. In particular, the horse must be entered under the name shown on the certificate. If this is a stable name, it must be clearly shown on the certificate and endorsed by a veterinary surgeon.

At the Championships, riders whose horses have to be placed into isolation stables as a result of a defective vaccination certificate are liable to be invoiced for the extra cost of the stable. Every effort will be made to ensure that checking at Area Qualifiers is carried out correctly. BRC accepts no responsibility whatsoever for any losses suffered, whether directly or indirectly, due to incorrect checking of vaccination certificates at any BRC Area Qualifier or Championship.

It is the sole responsibility of the member to ensure that their certificate is valid and it should not be assumed that because a vaccination certificate has been accepted at one competition in good faith, it will also be accepted at another competition or championship.
